The need for better business education

Marianne WhitfieldRecently I was at a meeting where the question ‘What do most business owners ask for help about?’ was mooted. The obvious issues of marketing and finance were mentioned but the debate took an interesting turn when one of the attendees at the meeting said, “Last week I was asked three times, by firms in three very different sectors, about how to find a business angel”.

That seemed an awfully specific question for three different people to ask but, as it turns out, the ‘word on the small business street’ is that you should try and find a business angel if you need money for your business. Why? Apparently, at this stage of the economic cycle, with the country moving out of a long recession, business owners’ perceptions are that the banks aren’t lending, venture capitalists will take the lion’s share of their business, but a philanthropic business angel will invest time, money and personal support – so that’s a much better avenue to pursue.

Be nice to me… I’m a business owner

Julie Stanford,Recently, I watched some episodes of Alex Polizzi’s The Fixer programme on BBC catch-up. Of all the business pundits on TV and radio, she’s the one I’ll go out of my way to watch.  It’s refreshing to see her no-nonsense style and willingness to tell the truth. She also seems genuinely to care about the business and its owners, and I like that.

As I watched the various programmes, I was struck by how unwilling the business owners were to receive the hard news about why things were going wrong. When Alex suggested that, in business, you need to know what your customers are really thinking – otherwise they’ll vote with their feet – the owners insisted that they “just knew” what people wanted. They didn’t have to ask. [Read more…]

Scratch for business

Blog-avatars-marianneA few years ago, when I was looking to turn my young twins into a mini geeks, I discovered a fantastic tool for teaching kids to code.

The Scratch project was initiated back in 2003 by the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab. I started using Scratch in 2009 and have spent five happy years watching my son and daughter learn how to create simple games and animations, without having to program one ‘real’ line of code. (Okay, my son is a lot more interested and engaged in this than my daughter, but I’m working on her!) [Read more…]

Starting a business is no box-ticking exercise

Blog-avatars-julieOver the last few years, there has been a fundamental shift in the options available to people who want to learn how to start up and run their own business.

Alterations to funding in business support have encouraged some organisations to offer qualifications for business start up, some of which are funded by the Skills Funding Agency.

For eight years, our own business start up workbooks have successfully been used by individual start ups, and by enterprise agencies and Chambers of Commerce to deliver their own funded training programmes. Now they are also being used by training companies, work programme providers and colleges across the UK for people looking to gain a qualification. [Read more…]

Enterprising Croydon

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been working with Lorraine Bell, an experienced business advisor and mentor, and Tom Brooks at Croydon Business, in setting up and running business startup workshops in Croydon.

Unlocking potential

We’re doing the work for Croydon Enterprise whose aims include, “Raising awareness and unlocking the entrepreneurial potential of key target groups to enable them to capitalise on their potential and competitive advantages and identify new opportunities for enterprise.” (I think that means that they want to support entrepreneurial people to start up businesses which grow and thrive.)
