Business know-how

Blog-avatars-julieWhen interviewed about The Essential Business Guide winning the Plain English Award, I’m often asked why it is so important for business information to be written and presented clearly. I try to explain (in the usual 20 words they allow you in a radio or presss interview!) how the challenge with business is that we all have to know so much. But here’s the rub: we don’t know how much we don’t know.

And the only way to find it all out is to read it, or hear it, or learn it from another business owner, or a business advisor.

Whichever way we learn it, we absolutely must learn it. Because as far as HM Revenue & Customs are concerned, ignorance is no defence. As business owners we are 100% liable. By learning all the tricks of the trade, knowing all the warning signs, and finding out about the ways other more experienced business owners do it, we learn not to take our eye off the cash flow so that when the tax bill comes, or the VAT Return is due, we can confidently pay them what we owe. On time. Without worrying.

There’s so much information out there now. There’s no excuse for us not taking advantage of it.

Whichever way you decide to learn what you still need to learn, please do it. If only to shut me up.
